How to write an essay plan?

The ability to write a good essay begins with careful and efficient planning. An academic essay aims to persuade readers of an idea based on evidence. An academic essay should include relevant examples, supporting evidence and information from academic texts or credible sources.

You can't write a successful essay unless you give yourself enough time to read, research, think and write. The first thing to do when the plan for an essay is to look carefully at the question. This may sound obvious but more students fail because they misread the question than for most other reasons, so it is essential that you read through and identify precisely what the question is asking. Be sure that you understand exactly what the question requires you to do. Identify the keywords (like discuss or analyze) and clarify the approach you are required to take.

Plan for an essay structure

After you have completed your research you need to plan for an essay structure. Essays are structured differently depending on the question and the subject, but some elements are common to most essays. The following basic structure:

  • The Introduction

  • The Main Body

  • The Conclusion

Introduction

The introduction should be brief, establish and explain your argument

without quotations, and will include your statement, i.e. your response to the question; a brief outline of the methodology you intend to employ; and an overview of the works you intend to center on. The best introductions quickly establish the argument and grab the reader's attention. These linking sentences should be provided throughout to give cohesion to your essay.

An Introduction must answer the question. This is how you put forward a strong argument. List the evidence your essay will put forward to prove your answer – This can be seen through an examination of the sections of society which supported the revolution. workers, peasants, soldiers, national minorities.

Main Body

How long you spend writing about each subject should reflect the importance of each subject. The main body of the essay should be structured with each paragraph being separate (but linked to the overall theme) and have your argument developing throughout. If a topic is more important, write about it first and write more words on it. If a topic is less important, write about it last and write fewer words on it.

This can be quite difficult, especially if you find one particular aspect of a question particularly interesting. You may be tempted to stray from the main argument but it is important to stay focused, as you will be penalized if your argument is not always seen to be relevant to the question. In the main body of the essay you need to use evidence to support the points you make and each quotation you use must be properly referenced.

Conclusion

The conclusion of your essay must be as carefully planned as the rest of your essay. To be considered a Conclusion, a Conclusion must do two things:

Answer the essay question again (using different words than in the Introduction, don’t repeat yourself exactly) – It was a genuine revolution.

Recap (repeat, summaries) all the evidence you have given to prove your answer during your essay– workers, peasants, soldiers, national minorities. In other words, it should leave the reader with a clear idea of what you have argued throughout, how well you believe you have accomplished it, and what possible future areas of study might be carried out.
