Work Permit - Application guide & tips

If you wish to work in Canada, you will almost certainly need to apply for a Work Permit. This article will explain the application procedure in detail, as well as the required supporting documents and processing periods. In this blog, we will learn about the documents required for Canada work permit. So, let’s get started.

Eligibility to the Work Permit

There are several eligibility conditions that all work permit applicants must meet. They should:

  • persuade the immigration officer that they will leave Canada when their Work Permit expires,

  • prove they have the financial means to sustain themselves and their family I during their time in Canada and (ii) when they return to their native country

  • Respect Canadian laws and refrain from engaging in any criminal behaviour.

  • not be seen as a danger to Canada's safety and security,

  • maintain good health and, if necessary, undergo medical examinations

  • Accepting a job from an ineligible employer is prohibited.

  • Employers who provide sex trade-related services (escorting, strip tease, erotic massages and dance, etc.) are not eligible for employment, and

  • To be admitted to Canada, you must supply any other proof needed by the immigration official.

Types of Work Permits

Only 2 types of Canadian Work Permits are issued:

  • Open Work Permit

  • Employer-Specific Work Permit

How to Apply for a Work Permit

You can apply from outside Canada in one of two ways: I online or (ii) on paper:

  • To apply online, you'll need a scanner or camera, as well as a credit or debit card. Here is where you may start your application. You'll need to establish a GCKey account first (make sure you memorise your 4 questions and answers you choose, as each time you connect to your account, you will be asked one of these questions after entering your login and password). Filling out the forms, signing them, scanning them, and uploading them are all required. You'll also have to upload all of the necessary supporting documents.

  • To apply by paper, you'll need to fill out and sign the forms. Then locate the Visa Application Center for your country (Vfs.Global) and bring all required supporting documentation.

To be honest, applying on paper is far more convenient and secure than applying online for the following reasons:

  • Visa Application Centers can provide answers in a variety of languages and ensure that applications are complete.

  • For a charge, Visa Application Centers can supply application photos and photocopies, ensuring that your photos are approved.

  • Visa Application Centers accept cash payments.

  • If you need a Temporary Resident Visa and apply online, you must still bring your passport to the Visa Application Center (for them to transmit it to the Canadian Consulate) and pay a charge that is nearly the same as if you applied directly with them. You'll just save a few dollars (less than $5), so it's not worth it.
